In these pages I will try to pass on some of the
spirit that made the BMC team so successful. With drivers that became household names,
Paddy Hopkirk, Timo Makinen, Rauno Aaltonen, Tony Fall, and co-drivers Henry Liddon, Paul
Easter, and Tony Ambrose, taking the Mini to outright victory on the Monte Carlo Rally in
1964,1965 and 1967. Plus victory and controversial disqualification in 1966. There is no
international rally worth mentioning that has not had a Works Mini in first spot, and due
to the outstanding team spirit, the Mini remained competitive, far longer than its
performance alone would justify. Even in 1968 the team were still giving Porsche, and Ford
Escorts a run for their money.
I have put together a few pages on some of the
surviving cars. These are by no means comprehensive, and centre mainly around my own
vehicles, as I have most information about them, but I will try to add more cars as time
goes by. During the restoration of my own cars, I have seen most of the survivors up and
down the country, and some of the photos included have been taken by me over the years.
I have included photographs, both recent and 60's, drawing upon the archive
of original pictures, built up over time. The lasting impression I am left with, having
met the many owners, and crawled all over the cars , is the enthusiasm that still exists.
The hours that are required to restore one properly cannot be measured, and neither can
the immense pride in ownership of a true piece of our motorsport history.
